Missing Reel Traverse. until Sat 25 Aug. various times. .0” From a single anecdote springs a contender for the funniest show of the Fringe. The anecdote belongs to actor Toby Jones. It concerns his experience as a bit player in the film Notting Hill. Jones played an obsessive fan in a single but crucial scene in which he frightens Jtilia Roberts' famoUs movie star into the arms of Hugh (irant's bookseller. You'll never see that scene. however. it was cut from the film. much to Jones' chagrin. Curious more than angry. Jones attempts to fathom why this happened. and this forms the basis for his monologue.
To help evoke Jones’ experience. sound effects are provided by a Foley anist. These are the folk who originate sounds for film. television and radio; at one point in this show Ayse Tashkiran rather impressively improvises a marching army by scrunching up a crisp packet. Sharing the stage. Jones and his mute co-star subtly. hilariously jostle for attention. And Jones‘ .‘y'otting Hill memories are likewise hilarious: a nerve- wracking audition for the bit part while perched awkwardly on a broken chair back. method-like preparation in the costume department for the role (tan or chocolate brown trousers?) and utter snubbings by Julia and Hugh. Amazingly. Jones displays a total absence of malice. (Miles Fielder)
