MERCHANT CITY FESTIVAL Week-long celebration with plenty of fun for the kids
For most of the year, Glasgow’s Merchant City is synonymous with bars, restaurants and nights out for the grown-ups. But during the Merchant City Festival, kids get more of a look- in, with over a week of fun activities taking place across the area. ‘The Merchant City Festival appeals to a broad range of audiences and promises something for everyone,’ says the festival’s producer, Lorenzo Mele. ‘We always aim to have a signii cant programme suitable for younger people – and this year’s is exceptional.’
Mele has bookended the festival with two great family events, starting with the Carnival Procession on Sat 22 Jul and the Provand’s Lordship free Family Fun Day a week later on
Sat 29 Jul. ‘Surprises of a winged variety’ are promised at Provand’s Lordship – Glasgow’s oldest house – along with craft activities, dressing up and the chance to meet some of the unusual characters who have populated the building over its 550-year history.
The popular Merchant Square Family Zone is back, with daily doses of fun each afternoon, plus storytelling at Scottish Youth Theatre, a Mad Hatters Tea Party at Britannia Panopticon, interactive screenings of Indiana Jones, Moana and more. ‘We’re providing young minds with a creative haven during the school holidays,’ says Mele, ‘with events that will i re the imagination.’ (Kelly Apter) ■ Various venues, Glasgow, Sat 22–Sun 30 Jul.
