PAM ANN The rudest air hostess alive celebrates 20 years of in-fl ight insults
Had Joan Rivers chosen the life of a spunky air hostess rather than that of a lippy globetrotting comedian, she may have turned out a little like Pam Ann. The caustic creation of Australian writer and producer Caroline Reid has been badmouthing passengers, pilots and other airlines for two full decades and is now jetting around the world to unleash her Touch Trolley Run to Galley 20th Anniversary Tour.
Dressed as though she’s wandered straight into one of Don Draper’s wildest drunken dreams, the retro-chic of Pam Ann doesn’t stop at her luminous attire; there’s something dei antly wicked about her refusal to toe anything like a politically correct line, with
barbs about the French particularly skirting the taste boundaries. To her credit though, Pam / Caroline usually reserves the worst slatings for whatever crowd she’s in front of at that moment, and claims that the Parisians adore her bawdy shtick. This former Melbourne goth has come a long way in those 20 years and a loyal following has helped keep her l ying high. And just to show that there are no hard feelings, British Airways and Lufthansa have i lmed adverts with Pam while Qantas even included one of her live DVDs as their in-l ight entertainment. Good sports, one and all. (Brian Donaldson) ■ Theatre Royal, Glasgow, Sun 18 Jun.
