CLARE WOODS: VICTIM OF GEOGRAPHY New works from one of the UK's most important painters
Victim of Geography is a new series of works made over the last two years by Clare Woods which are, in the artist’s words, ‘a build-up of events and experiences that have informed the works.’ Taken from a mixture of sources and personal experiences, Woods works impulsively, selecting her imagery as she i nds it: ‘it’s hard to quantify but I just know when I need to paint an image,’ she explains. Originally trained as a sculptor, Woods is today recognised as one of the UK’s most important painters, but her approach to the medium is still distinctly sculptural: ‘I’d describe myself as a painter that paints
thinking about the object,’ she says.
Several of the works at DCA measure 3m x 2m, huge aluminium sheets coated with thick swirls of oil, out of which i gures and objects emerge. These larger works are painted l at so Woods can ‘really i ght with the physicality of the brushes, the amount of paint and the structure.’ It’s an approach she relishes: ‘I can walk up and down the length of the painting allowing my movements of the brush to come from the arm rather than the wrist.
