H appy February folks. Or ‘filmy February’ as we’ve taken to calling it: this issue is packed with film highlights for the month and more. Of course, there’s the barnstorming, fist-pumping sequel to Trainspotting (read our T2 review on page 58). But it’s also Glasgow Film Festival time; head to page 17 for our pick of this year’s gems, including music extravaganza Lost in France, opener Handsome Devil, and our cover film, the Academy Award-nominated My Life as a Courgette (though those Oscar people have it down as ‘Zucchini’, naturally).
Talking of the Academy Awards, we’re big fans of nominees Moonlight (review on page 59),
Loving (page 58), Toni Erdmann (page 60), Hidden Figures (page 58) and Elle (page 62). In February, it’s also the Edinburgh Student Arts Festival, now in its third year: see our highlights for 2017 on page 36. In March, the Glasgow International Comedy Festival comes along, with a chance to see brand new shows as well as those Fringe sell-outs you may have failed to catch last August, like the wonderful Bridget Christie (page 28). And HippFest is back as well, with the best reason you’ll ever have to visit Bo’ness. Check out our profile of silent-film pioneer Nell Shipman on page 26, whose movie The Grub Stake opens the festival. Because even a century ago, women were making films too, y’know.

GLASGOW FILM FESTIVAL Our cover stars are part of a movie which some critics say is among the finest stop-motion films ever. My Life as a Courgette is just one of the delights in the 12-day long GFF which, as ever, features the best of classic and contemporary cinema. Iconic movies such as Chinatown rub shoulders against Mad to Be Normal, with David Tennant starring as notorious Glasgow-born psychiatrist RD Laing, while Andrew ‘Moriarty’ Scott pops up in the opening gala film, Handsome Devil.
