WINTER’S TALE AT THE LYCEUM SPACE LIVE AT USHER HALL
The Lyceum returns to the Shakespearean canon with acclaimed director Max Webster (King Lear with Michael Pennington; Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare’s Globe) presenting a uniquely Scottish take on the bittersweet masterpiece, The Winter’s Tale. When King Leontes suspects his wife Hermione of adultery, his jealousy tears the kingdom apart. The queen is banished and believed dead, while their daughter Perdita is abandoned among simple shepherd folk. Passionate tragedy interweaves with pastoral comedy, leading to one of Shakespeare’s most magical and moving denouements.
The cast includes Lyceum favourites Maureen Beattie (The Cherry Orchard), Frances Grey (Messiah, BBC); and John Michie (Taggart, seen recently in Grain in the Blood at the Traverse Theatre). This late, great play is performed by a talented company of actor musicians in a vibrant and lyrical production.
‘Circling the Earth in my orbital spaceship, I marvelled at the beauty of our planet. People of the world, let us safeguard and enhance this beauty – not destroy it!’ – Yuri Gargarin, first man in space. Join Edinburgh International Science Festival on Yuri’s Night (12 Apr) – the international celebration of human endeavour in space – as corduroy- clad London-based outfit Public Service Broadcasting perform their hit album The Race for Space from start to finish. With accompaniment from the National Youth Choir of Scotland and string quintet Mr McFall’s Chamber, this very special evening will bring stories and samples from the American and Soviet space race to life before your eyes and ears.
PSB’s uniquely spellbinding live AV transmissions see them weave samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics as they teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future.
