N EW A R T S PAC E F O R G O R E B R I D G E A former primary school in Temple, near Gorebridge, Midlothian, has been transformed into a new contemporary art gallery by Paul Robertson, previously curator at Edinburgh’s Summerhall. Lust and the Apple opens on Friday 13 February with two exhibitions. The Potter’s Field by Alexander and Susan Maris is based around nine paupers’ graves, one for each of the classical Muses, and Tim Sandys’ Damocles has six swords hanging from six helium balloons.

S C OT T I S H M U S I C I A N S H E A D TO SX SW Scottish bands including Fatherson, Hector Bizerk, the Twilight Sad and Roddy Hart & the Lonesome Fire are to represent the nation at the South by South West music festival in Austin, Texas, from 17 to 22 March. One of the most anticiapted international showcases for contemporary music, the musicians will be performing to thousands of music industry representatives and fans.

‘Trappings’ by Claire Barclay

The Scottish Government has announced an additional £10m of funding towards the construction of the new V&A Museum of Design Dundee, bringing its capital contribution to £25m. Work is expected to start in March, with the new building open to the public before June 2018.

B E U YS - I N S P I R E D OA K A R T P R O J EC T R E V E A L E D Deveron Arts in Huntly, near Aberdeen, has commissioned French-born artist Caroline Wendling to create a new piece of land art inspired by Joseph Beuys’ work 7000 Oaks. Beuys’ ambition was to plant a slow-growing oak wood in Scotland, and Wendling’s new work will use saplings grown from Beuys’ original work in Kassel, Germany, to create a new work rel ecting on the possibilities of peace during the centenary of World War I. N EW W O R KS F O R S N G M A C O L L EC T I O N Edinburgh’s Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art has acquired works by i ve contemporary artists shown in the long- running GENERATION exhibitions to add to its permanent collection. The works include Claire Barclay’s wood, ceramic and weaving installation ‘Trappings’ and Torsten Lauschmann’s video projection ‘Growing Zeros (Digital Clock)’, plus works by Henry Coombes, Alex Dordoy and David Shrigley.
