HISTORICAL STORYTELLING TALES OF A GRANDSON macrobert, Stirling, Sat 18 Oct; Edinburgh Festival Theatre Studio, Sat 25 & Sun 26 Oct

There’s no shortage of vibrant stories, characters and places in Scottish history, but remembering who did what to whom, where and what fashions of the day they were wearing at the time, is a struggle for most of us.

Happily, one of Scotland’s best- loved storytellers, Andy Cannon, has pieced together some of the highlights in his usual witty and entertaining style. ‘My aim was to share my passion

for Scottish history, and put the more celebrated events into a simple chronological order,’ says Cannon. ‘Which will hopefully encourage children to seek out for themselves the wealth of stories to be found in our nation’s past.’ Inspired by Walter Scott’s 19th-century history books, Tales of a

Grandfather, Cannon’s Tales of a Grandson is a time-travelling adventure in three parts. Entitled The Dig, The Feast and The Hooly, the three shows find Cannon encountering the kings, queens, friends and foes that make up Scotland’s past. All three will be performed in the same afternoon, but if you can’t make

them all, don’t worry. ‘Although the three parts are linked together with the story of a boy visiting his grandparents, each part has been created to be complete in itself,’ explains Cannon. ‘That said, the three parts have been written to come together and hopefully create a richer experience.’ Much like Scotland’s history, Cannon’s venture is populated with talented personalities, including musician Wendy Weatherby, dancers from Barrowland Ballet, a choir and young musicians from the Stirling Fèis.

‘I was looking to muster not just a talented creative team but also collaborators who would challenge me to create a piece that is both entertaining and thoughtful,’ says Cannon. ‘And the individual elements of story, music, dance and design have blended together effortlessly .’ (Kelly Apter)
