STAND-UP JON RICHARDSON Edinburgh Playhouse, Sat 13 Sep; Theatre Royal, Glasgow, Sun 14 Sep

Perhaps it’s his obsessive nature that keeps him so intently focused, but Jon Richardson shows few signs of slipping from the high spot he has earned in the top echelons of modern British stand-up. He had his own documentary on Channel 4 last year, A Little Bit OCD, but there’s no way he’ll be confined to his house as he takes Nidiot on tour.

First things first: what’s a nidiot then? ‘It’s something different from an idiot. An idiot is someone whose problems are caused by not concentrating enough. A “nidiot” is someone who makes his life more complicated by thinking too much rather than not enough. I’m not an idiot, but I’m definitely a “nidiot”.’

And if you’re familiar with any of the live work from this popular comic who has gone, at relatively breakneck speed, from playing small huts at the Fringe to stepping out on to major stages such as the Playhouse and Theatre Royal, you know that he’ll have acres of examples to prove just how much of a nidiot he really is.

However, there’s one thing that has definitely changed for the 8 Out of 10 Cats team captain as he embarks on this national tour: ‘The main theme of the show is being happy. Because I now live with my girlfriend, this is the first time I’ve gone on tour as a happy person.’ A pause before hitting us with a typically deadpan line: ‘Fingers crossed that something goes wrong by the time I record the DVD in October.’ (Brian Donaldson)

5 THINGS YOU SHOULD SEE BEFORE CHRISTMAS AT . . . GILDED BALLOON COMEDY AT DRYGATE

1 Felicity Ward The Aussie livewire (pictured) is one of the most endearingly entertaining acts on the circuit. Her recent show, The Iceberg, proved that she has good gags, isn’t afraid to make herself look daft and can keep a secret up her sleeve. Fri 12 Sep, Fri 19 Dec. 2 Aisling Bea She’s only being doing stand-up for about ten minutes, yet Bea has won So You Think You’re Funny and was nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer prize. Go and see what all the fuss is about. Fri 26 Sep.

3 Alfie Brown We once dubbed him ‘the future of British stand-up’ and we’re not going back on that bold claim just yet. You can’t always be sure what you’ll get from him, but passion for his craft and opinions to burn are two certainties. Fri 17 Oct. 4 Romesh Ranganathan Quite probably the next big thing in British stand-up, Ranganathan has two successful Fringe shows under his belt and was seen in August during Nick Helm’s two- hour extravaganza playing some sort of rapper. Fri 21 Nov.

5 Stuart Goldsmith A comic who deserves to be far more heralded than he is, Stu once reviewed an Arthur Smith show for us, on the proviso that he had to juggle some kippers. And he did! What a guy. Fri 5 Dec. (Brian Donaldson) Drygate, Glasgow, gildedballoon.co.uk.
