Name Keith Harris Job title Director of Performer Affairs

Company PPL

When did you start your job? I joined PPL in 2006, although I’ve been involved in the music industry since 1974, working for labels such as Motown as general manager, where I worked with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. In 1978 I left to work with Stevie Wonder and became operations manager for his companies I continue to represent him in the UK today.

What does your job actually involve? I’m responsible for helping to promote the work of PPL, to ensure that performers and record labels are aware of us and what it is we do. As a not-for-profit organisation, we help ensure that anyone making recorded music is paid fairly for their work, and we’re responsible for collecting royalties on behalf of our members in the UK and internationally. Our service is free to join and our members receive all of the money that we collect for them (minus running costs).

I get to travel a lot for my job and often attend and speak at a number of national and

international music seminars to help raise awareness of what PPL does and the importance of royalties in today’s music industry. We also have an International service, which means that if a performer’s track is played in a different country, they will still earn the money that’s collected. I also represent the needs of performers at board level, so that everything we do reflects

the needs of our members. This involves advising a number of performers and organisations on the music industry landscape and its many challenges, such as declining record sales.

Best / worst aspects of the job? Although I have worked in the industry for four decades, every day is still different, which I really enjoy. Meeting new people and helping performers and those in the industry is extremely rewarding. The role of royalties is increasingly important and it is great to be involved in this. One frustration is trying to get across the fact that performers deserve to be paid fairly for

their work there is still an expectation today that music should be free.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Keith Harris at the start of his career? I would encourage him to go for it and follow his dreams who knows where they might lead?

What are you most looking forward to in 2014? A good summer! PPL is a sponsor of this year’s Scottish Album of the Year Awards, with results announced on 19 June.
