VISUAL ART PRIVATE VIEW

In this issue’s column looking at emerging art talent we focus on the Brownlee Brothers. Calum and Fraser graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design last year and recently won the Fleming- Wyfold Bursary at the RSA New Contemporaries show in Edinburgh. They’ll be exhibiting at the Fleming Collection in London this month

What’s been going on since you left DJCAD? We were awarded a residency at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop, which has allowed us to take our work down a different path, using more traditional techniques such as cast iron, bronze and forged steel. Through these methods we’ve recently become really interested in medieval torture as an inspiration to new work. Fraser also spent a few months in Florence on the RSA John Kinross Scholarship, which was a fantastic opportunity.

What does winning the Fleming-Wyfold Bursary mean to you?

We both still can’t believe we’e been awarded the bursary! Since it was announced, all we have talked about are the limitless possibilities. We’re looking forward to working closely with [curator] Susanna Beaumont and the rest of the team at the Fleming Collection. Do you think people have preconceived ideas about Scottish art?

Having the chance to exhibit in London at this stage in our career, and at such an illustrious venue, is an amazing opportunity. It’ll let us exhibit outside Scotland for the first time and reach a whole new group of people. Our work is greatly influenced by our home town of Dundee, and we are chuffed to represent it in London. It’ll be interesting to see how our satirical Scottish pride will translate for an English audience.

What’s next?

A group show in May at Generator Projects, Dundee: They Had Four Years. We’re also making work for the Scottish Album of the Year Award Art Commission alongside the lovely Flo Gordon. (Interview by Rhona Taylor) New Scottish Artists, Fleming Collection, London, Mon 24 Mar–Sat 31 May.
