Super- intense war drama based on the true story of a 2005 Navy SEAL mission in northern Afghanistan which went horribly wrong (well, read the title). Wahlberg, Kitsch, Hirsch and Foster are highly effective as the squad members and Berg somewhat redeems 2011’s Battleship by largely avoiding jingoism. Draining but brilliant. Limited release. Starring Firth as a veteran of the ‘Death Railway’ – the line from Bangkok in Thailand to Rangoon in Burma constructed by Allied prisoners of war during World War II. In this adaptation of a true story, he sets out many years later to find those responsible for his torture. Limited release. RoboCop (12A) ●●●●● (José Padilha, US, 2014) Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton. 121min. When Detroit cop Alex Murphy (Kinnaman) is mutilated by a car bomb, wicked OmniCorp turns him into the first man-machine. This latest action-flick remake is well-cast and has some new features but unlike the original, its satire doesn’t bite, its premise doesn’t chill and its bloodless violence doesn’t have any impact. LA MAISON DE LA RADIO French documentary filmmaker Nicolas Philibert found fame back in 2002 with Etre et Avoir, an intimate, poignant portrait of a year in the life of a rural French school. His new offering, La Maison de la Radio, sets its sights on the imposing modernist edifice of Radio France, just down from the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the colourful characters inside it – from the news-gathering worker bees to enigmatic editors with their fingers on the buttons. On this evidence writer / director Anderson is fast becoming the John Cheever of US cinema.
