on the cusp of the swinging 60s, Donizetti’s comic opera is brought to fresh and colourful life in a new production by director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe (see above). ✽ Hebrides Ensemble with Marcus Farnsworth The
first event in Glasgow University’s four-year commemoration of World War I marks the centenary of the Great War’s outbreak with a programme reflecting themes of tragedy, loss, demoralisation, defiance and hope, and it’s repeated in Edinburgh the following evening. ✽ La clemenza di Tito From 1960s Rome (see
Scottish Opera, above) to ancient Rome in the same week, opera lovers in Glasgow are spoilt for choice. Rarely performed, Mozart’s last opera is a work of sublime beauty, heart- wrenching in its expression, and it provides a great chance to see the impressive RCS Opera Department at its best.
