Ten years ago, Born To Be Wide was launched as a social night for the disparate elements of the capital’s music scene, with guest DJs invited to play whatever they wanted. A decade later it has evolved into an indispensable part of the Scottish music industry, hosting regular seminars, a ‘Wide Days’ convention, ‘Off The Record’ youth events and a night promoting local acts performing during the Fringe. On Thu 6 Feb, Born To Be Wide
celebrates its tenth birthday with a special party at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus and is giving away a package of prizes to mark the occasion. One winner will get a goodie bag with a golden ticket for every Born To Be Wide night in 2014; the opportunity to do a 45-minute self-indulgent DJ set; a meal for two at Hendersons; a free 2½ hour rehearsal session at The Wel practice rooms, plus a BTBW T-shirt and shot glass. Five runners-up will win T-shirts and free admission for Born To Be Wide nights on Thu 6 Feb and Thu 6 Mar. ■ To win, tell us two of the [very few] acts that guest DJs are banned from playing. The Glasgow East End arts venue Platform is delighted to be teaming up with Celtic Connections for an eclectic weekend of local and global music on Fri 24 and Sat 25 Jan. Friday night will feature Withered Hand, Richard Dawson (see feature, page 69), Jeff Lang and The Mae Trio, and on Saturday night there will be performances from Malcolm Middleton (pictured, above), Jordie Lane, Papon and Dark Northumbrian.
