TECHNO/ ELECTRO MODERAT The Arches, Glasgow, Sat 8 Feb
It’s a collaboration that on paper just shouldn’t work. Modeselektor (aka duo Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary) and Apparat (aka Sascha Ring) were both moving in the same circles on the Berlin music scene but playing very different variations on the techno formula. The former specialised in glitchy bass-driven electro, the latter was moving into soulful melodic electronica, however their distinct styles perfectly complemented each other. Modeselektor provided the beats while Apparat added an emotional resonance and expressive vocals. Their first EP, Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit, was released in 2003, but it was another six years before their
eponymous debut album landed. In the meantime, both acts had strengthened their own standing within the world of dance music. Modeselektor released the critically acclaimed Hello Mom! and found a fan in Thom Yorke, while Apparat took time out to collaborate with Ellen Allien on Orchestra of Bubbles.
Now they are back with their second album, simply titled II. ‘We wanted to keep the open, spacious
cinematic thing from the first record,’ explained Ring in a recent interview with Resident Advisor, ‘but we wanted to make it less produced, a little more fucked-up sounding in parts, the drums less polished. But in the end, you go with the flow.’ This upcoming Arches gig almost didn’t happen. The show was originally scheduled for Substance’s seventh birthday last October, but Ring sustained multiple leg fractures in a motorcycle accident in his native Germany and the tour was cancelled. Substance rescheduled and posted a new date at the Picture House in Edinburgh for 8 February. Since then that venue has been snapped up by pub giants JD Wetherspoon and is now closed for live music business (see News, page 7). This string of bad luck has thankfully come to an end and now Substance heads down the M8 to Glasgow where Scotland will finally be able to enjoy the full Moderat live experience. (Henry Northmore)
