23 Jan–20 Feb 2014 THE LIST 103
Name Yvonne Murray
Job title Events/Venue Director Company Northern Roots Events
When did you start your job? 2011 – quite by accident! I used to work for an independent TV production company, initially as a researcher/developer and latterly as an assistant producer. Before that I was a bit of a bum. Then I met a man and life changed forever . . . So what does your job actually involve? Northern Roots Events is a company I set up in 2011 alongside my partner Bruce MacGregor. We run Bogbain Farm, Scotland’s ‘best unusual venue’, as well as the Inverness Whisky Festival, BrewDog’s Brew at the Bog, the Northern Roots Festival and the Blazin’ Fiddles music school Blazin’ in Beauly. Brew at the Bog and the Inverness Whisky Festival are my main responsibilities, as well as organising the weddings and gigs we host at Bogbain Farm. I book all the acts, and I organise the stages, licensing, staff, website, marketing, planning and so on.
Best / Worst Aspects? Best aspects are being my own boss, being in control of my own career and working with Bruce. The worst aspect is trying to ignore negativity from people who don’t share our vision and passion, and never getting a minute’s peace! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Yvonne Murray at the start of her career? Keep on keeping on.
And finally . . . what are you most looking forward to in 2014? Our events are growing rapidly and so I’m looking forward to where this year will take us! Also looking forward to a nice holiday!
■ Brew at the Bog is on Sat 3 May at Bogbain Farm. Tickets on sale now.
