5 VISUAL ART Jerry Gretzinger: Jerry’s Map

Sadly unable to re-inhabit their rightful home of the Glasgow School of Art, the Optimo boys wasted no time in booking their regular Hogmanay haunt at Glue Factory for their New Year revels. The excellent Golden Teacher headline. See Hogmanay feature, page 13. Glue Factory, Glasgow, Tue 31 Dec. Gretzinger’s maps of a country that doesn’t exist started off with a fictitious city centre and, over the course of 50 years, grew into an incredible collection of 2500 meticulously designed drawings and paintings. See preview, page 128. Summerhall, Edinburgh, until Fri 24 Jan.

6 MUSIC Black Sabbath

7 COMEDY Trevor Noah

It’s a huge pleasure to see most of the original line-up back together. Sadly, drummer Bill Ward wasn’t able to join in, but Rage Against The Machine’s Brad Wilk is a worthy replacement. See preview, page 95. The Hydro, Glasgow, Mon 16 Dec. When Noah first visited during the 2012 Fringe, we described him as ‘a class act with a raft of original insights’ in our four-star review. He’s bringing his show The Racist back for another round. See preview, page 74. The Stand, Glasgow, Mon 6 Jan.

8 THEATRE Peter Panto and the Incredible Stinkerbell Johnny McKnight works his panto magic at the Tron once again, with plenty of local references to please the Glasgow aficionados. See review, page 122. Tron Theatre, Glasgow, until Sat 4 Jan.

9 MUSIC RM Hubbert and Aidan Moffat

The two Scottish Album of the Year Award winners form the line-up for a cracking gig as part of Celtic Connections. See CC preview, page 93. Mitchell Library, Glasgow, Tue 21 Jan.

10 CHOSEN BY GRANT STOTT, PANTO STAR Edinburgh’s Christmas

It’s a funny time of the year for me: my home city is at its busiest, but I tend to always miss out due to my panto commitments. I guess I’m looking at this as something I wish I could enjoy for myself this Christmas and it’s a neat combination of two of my favourite

things: Edinburgh and Christmas. The whole buzz around this year’s Christmas celebrations has been fantastic. Starting off with the huge crowds that welcomed Sir Chris flicking the lights on, to the online pics of those brave enough to try the Star Flyer, to the market and fabulous Christmas theme that now dominates St Andrew Square and George Street. It seems to have something for everyone, with markets, attractions and the rather exotic Limbo (see review, page 124). The idea of heading into town wrapped up and taking in the festive sights, sounds and smells is just magical I only hope I get a chance to do it myself! Edinburgh’s Christmas, various venues, until Sun 5 Jan. Grant Stott stars in Peter Pan, King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, until Sun 19 Jan.
