NUMBERS’ 10TH BIRTHDAY An interview with the club’s co-founder Richard Chater

‘I t was probably the first time that my

older mates and Jack and Calum’s [fellow Numbers men Jack Revill and Calum Morton] younger friends came together; over the years, this mixing of different crowds has definitely become a crucial element of Numbers. I remember the music was all over the place but brilliantly so, with stuff like R&B, dancehall, hip hop, techno and electro all getting played.’ As celebrations tenth anniversary draw nearer, the club night’s co-founder Richard Chater is offering his admittedly hazy recollections of its first outing. Since their early, 100-capacity events around Glasgow, they’ve gone on to establish their own record label, radio show and a music festival and have thrown regular parties worldwide.

‘We met each other through partying, really,’ he adds, explaining how everyone involved first came together. ‘We’d go to each other’s

nights, be at the same clubs and parties, and usually end up talking about records; we were all pretty much into the same stuff so it made sense to do something together.’

Describing Numbers’ early musical remit as ‘techno, hip hop and all points in between’, their eclectic approach has gone beyond simply the resident DJs tastes: it’s also characterised their booking policy, taking in everyone from Autechre to Just Blaze, and a release schedule as wilfully varied. ‘Each new thing we’ve done has been a step into the unknown, but through partying and making friends we’ve built networks that have helped us along the way,’ Chater admits. ‘The one thing we’ll never do is rest on our laurels; we want to keep finding exciting new music and expose it to others.’ (Colin Chapman)
