CHRISTMAS MARKETS Buy last minute gifts and fi ll yourself with festive grub at Glasgow and Edinburgh’s seasonal markets
GLASGOW By far the biggest and most popular in the city, Glasgow Christmas market (St Enoch’s Square, Sat 16 Nov–Mon 23 Dec) offers shoppers a wide selection of gifts and food and drink from local produce to more exotic delights. Meanwhile, The Lighthouse (Mitchell Lane, Sat 7, 14 & 21 Dec, Sun 1, 8, 15 & 22 Dec) are hosting Christmas markets every weekend this month, with unique gift ideas from over 30 artists. For lovers of all things retro and vintage, there’s the Little Bird Market at Sloans (Argyll Arcade, Sun 8 Dec) and, just up the road, the Arches Cafe is hosting Bohemia Festive Fair (Argyll Street, Sun 15 Dec). Down on the Southside, there’s the Afternoon Twee Xmas Market which comes to The Social (Kilmarnock Road, Sat 7 Dec) for a one day vintage fair. This Is Not A Craft Fair (Govanhill Baths, Sat 14 Dec) may sound like it’s having an existential crisis but with work by local crafters, interactive entertainment and a charitable twist, it is definitely worth a look. 58 THE LIST 12 Dec 2013 – 23 Jan 2014
EDINBURGH At the heart of Edinburgh’s Christmas are the many festive markets offering a variety of goods, most notably the exotic surprises of the highly popular European Christmas Market (Mound Precinct and East Princes Street Gardens, Fri 22 Nov–Sun 5 Jan), the happily traditional Scottish market (St Andrews Square, Fri 22 Nov–Sun 5 Jan) and, for the kids, there are toys galore at the Children’s Market (St Andrews Square, Fri 22 Nov–Sun 5 Jan). The folks at the Stockbridge Farmers’ Market (Jubilee Gardens, Saunders Street, 8, 15 and 22 Dec) will also be on hand as always with their fresh produce to make for some cracking Christmas dinners. For the more craft-daft among your friends and family, you might want to pay a visit to the Christmas Multiples Market (Edinburgh Printmakers, Sat 14 Dec) or Out Of The Blue Christmas Arts Markets (Drill Hall, Sat 7 & 14 Dec), where you’re sure to find something they’ll love.
