We love to highlight the arrivals that make a particular impact on the scene, and each year reserve our special awards for our pick of the best newcomers in the twelve month cycle of each Eating & Drinking Guide. This year The List’s Eating & Drinking Guide Awards for 2013 picked out the local food-inspired, communal-eating Gardener’s Cottage on the slopes of Calton Hill in Edinburgh, The Vintage, an attractive Leith pub that combines Scottish craft beer with a bold bar menu featuring British charcuterie, The Fish People Café, a spin-off from the popular fi shmonger at Shields Road subway station on the south side of Glagow, and the Hanoi Bike Shop, Glasgow’s fi rst Vietnamese restaurant opened by the team behind the Ubiquitous Chip and Stravaigin just off Byres Road.
Previous winners — places we’ve given a newcomer award to during their fi rst year of business — have included places such as The Dhabba, The Left Bank, Nanakusa, Crabshakk, Banana Leaf, Cookie and Martha’s in Glasgow, and The Dogs, Wedgwood the Restaurant, L’escargot Bleu, Ondine, Castle Terrace, Bia Bistrot, Mithas and Kanpai in Edinburgh. 12 Dec 2013–23 Jan 2014 THE LIST 51
