THE HOT 100
TYCI’S Top 5
The female-led collective TYCI (in at number 50) choose their
heroes of 2013
JENNY SOEP
Soep is a Scottish-born live music illustrator. This year, she drew the likes of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and Marnie Stern, as well as running an exhibition of her work in Stockholm and a residency in Glasgow with playwright Lynda
Radley. LAW
With a voice like a twisted
Billie Holiday, Edinburgh-based vocalist Lauren Holt – aka LAW (pictured, below) – blew us away with her song ‘Hustle’ earlier
this year.
TAVI GEVINSON Gevinson is the 17-year-old founder of Rookiemag.com, a site originally designed as a fashion blog that has since
grown into a place for all things positive when it comes to
teenage girls. Gevinson has also
been vocal about her mental
health issues, aiming to reduce stigma surrounding depression and start discussions among a younger audience, most notably during her awesome keynote
speech at the Melbourne Writers
Festival this year.
LADYFEST GLASGOW Many moons had passed
since a Ladyfest took place in Glasgow, but this year a new group of women took the reins and organised a great two- day experience of live music,
workshops and stalls.
ANITA SARKEESIAN Canadian-American feminist Sarkeesian is the creator of
video blog Feminist Frequency. In 2012, she set up a Kickstarter to fund a video series focusing
on gender tropes in video games and became the victim of sexist online harassment. Now Sarkeesian has secured
enough funding to run Feminist Frequency professionally and
has been part of the inspirational TEDxWomen series. Take that
nasty trolls.

48 BRAW GIGS NOISE MERCHANT
Bigger and brawer than ever, the one-man powerhouse DIY gig promoter worked from a base at Summerhall, hosting mesmerising shows and talks from Cut Hands, Umberto, Ian Nagoski, Stefan Blomeier + Claire, plus other central belt gigs including Vatican Shadow and Wolf Eyes. (CS)

47 SCOTTISH BALLET DANCE TRIUMPH
46 T IN THE PARK BALADO BONANZA
Taking place over four days, featuring the work of 15 choreographers and with almost 20 different components on stage and screen, Scottish Ballet’s Dance Odysseys was a highlight of this year’s Edinburgh International Festival. Ambitious and risky but a total triumph. (KA) The 20th anniversary of our premier music fest may not have had the biggest names in its history, but the long weekender still had a wildly eclectic line-up in which Mumford & Sons, Rihanna and the Killers played off against Kraftwerk, My Bloody Valentine, and the Proclaimers.
