C harlie Brooker isn’t the only one shouting about video games at the moment. Our annual list of Scotland’s leading creative talent is topped by games developer Rockstar North. The arrival of Grand Theft Auto V back in September was a huge cultural event; it received near universal critical praise and made a staggering $800 million within 24 hours of being released (see page 40 to read more).
But the Hot 100 isn’t only filled with international success stories (although there are certainly a few in there: Andy Murray, Chvrches, we’re looking at you). There are plenty of local triumphs too, including women’s collective TYCI; pop-up dining group Street Food Cartel; Glasgow’s experimental music festival Tectonics; and Edinburgh documentary makers Emma Davie and Morag Mackinnon, to give just a flavour. As well as taking stock of the last year we’ve also been looking ahead to 2014, which is set to be the biggest year Scotland has had in some time. There is of course the referendum, and the Commonwealth Games, but around those two events a whole host of cultural activity is being planned. For a taste of some of these happenings check out our preview on page 42.

You can read our selection of the country’s finest artists, organisations and venues from page 21.
