EXPERIMENTAL/JAZZ FESTIVAL GIO FEST 2013 CCA, Glasgow, Thu 28-Sat 30 Nov
‘Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra has had a determination to exist and develop that has really impressed all of us’, says Evan Parker. The legendary British free jazz saxophonist has been a supporter of the Orchestra from the start and performed at last year’s tenth anniversary GIO Fest. ‘Being there . . . showed just how far they have come in terms of individual commitment from the players and their solidarity as an organisation’.
The sixth instalment of GIO Fest is testament to that commitment and vision. It sees the Orchestra joined by a diverse range of international improvisers for a weekend of performances, workshops, talks and films. American pianist Marilyn Crispell, a longtime member of Anthony Braxton’s Quartet, performs solo and in a duo with Edinburgh-born vocalist and friend of GIO Maggie Nicholls. A member of Tom Waits’ current junkyard ensemble, composer, improviser and drum guru Gino Robair brings his modified percussion, bowed objects and electronic gadgets to Glasgow for a showdown with the Orchestra. There’s also shimmering vibraphone-led jazz from the Anglo-French quartet of Corey Mwamba, Andy Champion, Sylvain Darrifourq and Valentin Ceccaldi.
This year’s new commissions are the premiere of Graham Wilson’s A Peculiar Slumber and GIO leader Raymond MacDonald’s collaboration with Crispell and Nicholls, Parallel Moments Unbroken. There are also smaller groups featuring GIO members, including Dada percussionist Fritz Welch’s duo with French jerry-rigged electronics maverick Arnaud Riviere. The life of the great Lol Coxhil, who collaborated with GIO in his final years, is celebrated with Helen Pett’s touching short- film Solo Soprano. (Stewart Smith)
