RINSE GLASGOW: SKREAM Dubstep pioneer throws house and disco into the mix
A s he’s one of dubstep’s most influential figures, it may have come as something of a shock when Oliver Jones – aka Skream – started to sneak house and disco into his sets, making some of his fans (especially the younger ones) a little angry. ‘It was obvious I was gonna lose fans,’ he says of his transition, ‘and of course I care, but at the end of the day I wasn’t feeling inspired any more and the 120–130 (BPM range) was what was really exciting me.’ With the likes of Disclosure, Ben Pearce and Duke Dumont riding high in the charts, house music does seem to be the genre du jour, and while dubstep certainly had its time, the mainstream’s fascination with it seems to have fizzled out.
But although it might surprise some people, house and techno have been present throughout Oliver’s career. Gearing up for a special ‘all night long’ party with Rinse FM at the Sub Club this November, you can expect his set to reflect that. ‘I’ve been looking forward to this show since it was brought to me – I always have such a belter in Glasgow,’ he says excitedly. ‘I was thinking of opening with some classic disco – not the obvious tracks, but some more obscure bits. Then again, I’ve also had it in my head to start off with some deeper house.’ Excited, passionate and free, the next chapter of Skream is definitely unwritten. (Alex Caslano)
