D espite this being the season for all things dark and deathly, this issue is looking remarkably lively. On page 22 Rachel McCrum charts the recent explosion of spoken word events in Scotland and beyond, and considers the form’s colourful history ahead of the relaunch of her cabaret night Rally & Broad. Comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans bring their event The Sunday Assembly to Scotland for the first time this October. A mix of comedy, songs, and tea and cake come together to form a kind of church service for atheists – you can find out more from Jones himself on page 25. And we’ve noticed some changes recently in Glasgow and Edinburgh’s pub and bar scene, with a new crop of enticing drinking establishments popping up away from the city centres – David Pollock finds out more, and we offer some tips on new places to go for a pint, on page 29.
All that being said, we’ve not forgotten All Hallows’ Eve: this year’s spooky cultural offerings span everything from a drive-in screening of Ghostbusters to moody electronica in the National Galleries. Check out our pick of the best Hallowe’en events from page 15.

HALLOWE’EN It’s important to keep your spirits up in these cold, dark months, which is probably why our pagan ancestors planned to have Hallowe’en midway between the end of summer and the start of the Christmas shopping season. It was either that or some religious motivation, anyway. We’ve uncovered a few new ways to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve, from freaky films to (literally) underground festivals. Read all about ‘em from page 15. 29
SPOKEN WORD Scotland’s passion for poetry and performance writing has never been stronger. Rachel McCrum of literary cabaret night Rally & Broad gives us a guide to the resurgence of spoken word. NEW PUBS & BARS While city centre properties remain pricey, some bar entrepreneurs are looking further afield to survive. We find out more from a few of the prime movers and (cocktail) shakers.
