Contemporary visual art fest Glasgow International returns for its sixth year next April, with major new commissions on the horizon from Bedwyr Williams (pictured), Aleksandra Domanovic, Sue Tompkins and Simon Martin. Off-site projects will be imagined by artists including Jordan Wolfson, Avery Singer and Charlotte Prodger. LOT T E RY AWA R D F O R G L A S G OW ’S K E LV I N H A L L Since the Transport Museum at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow was moved to its new home of the Riverside Museum, hopes have been high about what might become of the space. Finally, thanks to a £4.5m lottery grant, it seems that the hall will be revamped into a major museum facility, showcasing over a million pieces from Glasgow’s civic collection, as well as some work from the Hunterian Museum. The space will also host the National Library of Scotland’s Scottish Screen Archive, as part of its new capacity as a cultural and research centre.

JA M E S M AC M I L L A N L AU N C H E S N EW C L A S S I C A L F E S T I VA L Violinist Nicola Benedetti joined composer James MacMillan earlier this month to launch plans for an Ayrshire-based classical festival, which will run for four days next October. Benedetti was announced as patron of the event that will be held in various venues in and around MacMillan’s hometown of Cumnock.

Carol Ann Duffy and John Burnside have just been announced as part of the line-up for 2014’s StAnza Scotland’s International Poetry Festival celebrations. The pair will join such esteemed literati as Paul Muldoon, Sujata Bhatt, David Constantine and Tishani Doshi next March for a programme that promises themes including ‘A Common Wealth of Poetry’, which invites poets from all over the Commonwealth to contribute, Book lovers can still cast their votes for the Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust Book Awards, with four titles, Close Your Eyes by Ewan Morrison, Empire Antarctica by Gavin Francis, Small World by Richard Price and Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice-Cream Float Before He Stole My Ma by Kerry Hudson i ghting it out for the coveted £30,000 prize. Some top support acts have just been announced for the Edinburgh Street Party

We can’t lie, we’re a wee bit excited. As if it weren’t sufi cient that electro-poppers Pet Shop Boys are headlining this year’s New Year’s Eve street party jamboree in Edinburgh, a clutch of darn i ne local heroes have been added to the supporting mix. In the wake of a mighty i ne touring schedule both sides of the pond, BBC Sound of 2013 contenders Chvrches (pictured above) will join Mercury Prize nominees Django Django on the Waverley Stage. The Scottish contingent just keeps on coming in the guise of punk rockers The Rezillos, in what’s shaping up to be a royally good night for the street party’s 21st birthday year.

Creosote will take to the Scottish stage on Frederick Street with his band, along with Glasgow-based Celtic group Treacherous Orchestra and Shetland collective Fiddlers’ Bid. Around 80,000 people are expected to turn up on New Year’s Eve to enjoy music and entertainment over i ve different stages, with the precinct next to the Scottish National Gallery set to host an open-air ceilidh dance space, and more names will be announced for the stage on top of The Mound.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay artistic director Pete Irvine said of this year’s line-up: ‘Scotland’s big year starts here and what better way to launch ourselves into the New Year than with a showcase of Scotland’s musical talent in the home of Hogmanay.’ Edinburgh’s full Hogmanay festival runs from Mon 30 Dec–Wed 1 Jan.
