EASTERN PROMISE Acid folk and synth-pop comes to Easterhouse
‘I like events that are quite eclectic, where as long as you know one act you kind of trust, the worst case scenario is that it will be interesting. Like the spicy cinnamon jelly bean in with the mixed fruit flavours: you don’t necessarily like it but you’re glad it’s there . . . the bill makes some kind of sense.’ So says Alun Woodward, ex-Delgado and Eastern Promise programmer. Now in its fourth year, the festival continues to bring an eclectic range of music to Easterhouse.
Scottish acts form the weekend’s backbone, from established figures like Fife troubadour James Yorkston and Trossachs folk visionary Alasdair Roberts, to emergent artists like nocturnal pop alchemist Ela Orleans and Falkirk loop-wizard Adam Stafford. Reformed Glasgow indie heroes The Vaselines promise to charm with their ramshackle tunes and romantic, sometimes downright filthy lyrics. Acid-folk legends The Incredible String Band
have had a huge influence on today’s folk- leaning acts, so it’s highly appropriate that co-founder Mike Heron should be on this bill, performing with Glasgow psych-folk troupe Trembling Bells. ISB’s love of esoteric instruments is shared by Belgian lute virtuoso Jozef van Wissem, who returns to Glasgow fresh from winning best soundtrack at the Cannes Film Festival for Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. Hypnotic and darkly beautiful, his compositions open a portal between Renaissance Europe and the contemporary avant-garde. Bringing an air of uncanny Englishness to proceedings, Grumbling Fur (pictured) re-imagine 80s synth-pop as psychedelic hymns sung by UFO-obsessed ex-choirboys. (Stewart Smith)
