STAND-UP JASON MANFORD EICC, Edinburgh, until 25 Aug; Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, Fri 30 & Sat 31 Aug

We’re often told that when they’re on stage, most comedians offer up a heightened version of their true self. They say certain things and act in a particular way, but it’s all fine because, in varying degrees, it’s all just part of an act. Seems that this is not the case with Jason Manford, who is the same in front of TV and live audiences as he is away from the media spotlight. This niceness has translated into massive success for Manford, who

first made a name for himself in Scotland when he was nominated for the last-ever Perrier Award back in 2005. With his latest tour, he’s confronting the much-derided notion of First World Problems. ‘I’d seen the phrase online and liked it; it just sums up so much and the phrase emphasises those times when we moan about the most trivial things. It’s as if we invent problems so we have something to moan about. I imagine someone in the Third World just thinking that we were all complete idiots.’ (Brian Donaldson)
