HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?
Name Anna Ruiz Job title Marketing Manager
Company Festival & King’s Theatres Edinburgh
When did you start your job? I started as Marketing Manager in February 2012, but I’ve been with the company since 2009. So what does your job actually involve? I manage the marketing team, which is responsible for advertising all our shows and communicating with customers. We’ve got over 3000 seats to sell for most nights of the year between our two theatres, so we’re always busy. I have to decide how much cash to spend on each show, plan what advertising we need, and oversee our design, print and online activity. Our audiences are at the heart of everything we do, so we try to research what our visitors want - and then try to make sure they have a great experience at our theatres from start to finish.
Best / Worst Aspects? I love the process of liaising with our fabulous designer to turn creative ideas into good-looking bits of print. It’s also great getting to see so many different productions and meeting our visiting companies. We recently had a launch event for War Horse, coming to the Festival Theatre in January 2014, and we got to meet Joey the star puppet – he’s so incredibly life-like that you start to believe he’s a real horse. The worst part of the job is not having enough time to do everything: there are infinite ways to sell a show, and a finite amount of hours in the day. Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Anna at the start of her career? The best way to learn is hands-on experience. I started with an internship and learned most of what I know through on-the-job placements. Even if you have to volunteer your time for free for a little while, it’s the best way to get noticed and pays off in the long-run.
And finally . . . what has been your biggest achievement in 2013? I have a relatively new team in place that I’ve been helping to train over the past year. It’s been pretty cool watching them develop and I have no doubt they’re all going to have hugely successful careers in the arts. Our War Horse launch event was also a huge achievement. We introduced 500 school children and members of the community to Joey, the show’s star puppet, and live-screened the event into every school in Scotland. Afterwards tickets were flying out the door which was a fantastic result.
