JESSE ROSE The house producer/DJ tours his ambitious 12 x 12 project

J esse Rose specialises in house music but he seems to enjoy playing with the form. He starts with the foundations of the genre but has taken it in so many directions from big dancefloor bangers to deep underground cuts. His record label Made to Play has helped kick start the careers of Sinden, Riva Starr, Round Table Knights and Oliver $. ‘For me the best thing about the label is finding and nurturing talent,’ explains Rose from his home in LA.

Growing up in Ladbroke Grove influenced by the reggae soundsystems blasting out early house and drum & bass during his formative years Rose moved to the States six years ago. ‘I’d have thought when I got out here I’d start making more commercial records because it’s sunny and the environment in LA is definitely more commercial, but actually I’ve been making much deeper records.’

2013 has seen the launch of Rose’s most ambitious project to date, his 12 x 12 series. ‘Basically it’s a way of releasing music unconventionally: instead of releasing an album I’m going to release an EP or a single on the twelfth of every month. It’s a new way of letting people digest the music because if you give them 12 tracks on an LP they often just pick their top three. But by releasing one every month you put focus on every track, especially deeper tracks which might usually get missed.’ It’s a big complicated project, especially when Rose has to fit it around his touring schedule. ‘If people can have three kids I can definitely make 12 records,’ he laughs.
