58 THE LIST 13 Jun–11 Jul 2013
STAND-UP & FOOD HARDEEP SINGH KOHLI Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Sun 16 Jun
With interest in cuisine never being higher as witnessed by the rise in the number of food programmes on the box, Hardeep Singh Kohli appears to have landed himself the perfect niche for a live comedy show. His all-conquering Indian Takeaway is a mix of chat, stand-up and cookery in which Kohli creates a meal on stage while challenging a local restaurant to deliver a favourite dish, allowing the audience to decide which one is finer. With extensive knowledge of both the food industry and
showbusiness, Kohli has surely struck on a winning formula that he could take round the country while he still has the strength to crush a garlic. ‘About 40% of the show is ad-libbed with the audience on the night and there are so many stories that I haven’t even starting telling yet so it could keep going,’ says Kohli. ‘In the current financial climate, I’ve been lucky with the audience numbers and I seem to attract everyone from ages 9 to 90, but I wouldn’t want to take that for granted. I do enjoy this show so much but I wouldn’t want to think I was boring people.’ While his haggis and butternut squash vindaloo has been highly
praised, he is always keen to keep things interesting on stage. ‘I did a venison and raspberry curry once that I didn’t think was going to work but venison is the most real of meats. Offstage I’ve invented a couple of dishes: a bubble and squeak and chai custard with a cardamom rhubarb crumble. Hopefully it’s more fusion than confusion.’ (Brian Donaldson)
