5 REASONS TO GO TO . . .

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL OF CYCLING 1 It’s the first one ever Edinburgh doesn’t seem to have reached festival saturation point yet, so how about one for cycling? The original proposed mission statement suggested that, ‘it wouldn’t be about the cyclist, it would be about people who use or who would like to use a bicycle for whatever reason’. 2 It’s got broad appeal There will be short films on the big screen at Festival Square and four photography exhibitions across the city, with talks from broadcaster Mark Beaumont, record-breaker Juliana Buhring and Copenhagen’s cycling ambassador Mikael Colville- Andersen. 3 But it’s also about the cyclist Including races, rides, tours of the Lothians, family events, a night ride and a climb up Arthur’s Seat, as well as workshops, unicycling and a day of bike polo. 4 They’ve used their imagination Your attention is drawn to the ‘build your own bamboo bike frame’ course, the ‘Heels on Wheels’ all-day ladies cycling event in the Meadows and a bike-based poetry slam in association with Inky Fingers at the Forest Café. Plus we wanted to flag up their commendable pun in referring to the latter as a ‘SPOKEn word’ event. 5 It’s the right time for it The organisers cite Edinburgh’s ambition to be a centre for cycling, and point out that it was the first British city to sign the Charter of Brussels, which aims ‘to invest in bicycle policy as an integrated part of urban mobility’. The Edinburgh Festival of Cycling (edfoc.org.uk) can only be an important part of that process. (David Pollock) Various venues, Edinburgh, Sat 15–Sun 23 Jun.

13 Jun–11 Jul 2013 THE LIST 45

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL MAGIC FESTIVAL Various venues, Edinburgh, Fri 28 Jun–Fri 5 Jul

Edinburgh International Magic Festival pops up at the end of June for the fourth time, aiming to pull magic off the telly and put it back where it belongs: on stage. Spanning close-up magic, stage illusion and mentalism, the eight-day programme (magicfest.co.uk) attempts to mess with your sensory system, walk your attention around like a marionette and have you oohing and ahhing like a four year old.

Paul Wilson of the BBC’s Real Hustle takes a night off from teaching poker cons for an intimate sleight of hand performance (Point Hotel, Wed 3 Jul), while things get grand at the Magic and Variety Gala Show (Lyceum Theatre, Fri 28 Jun) with a line-up including Morgan & West (the time-travelling Victorians), Piff the Magic Dragon (a droll, dragon- costumed Chihuahua owner) and Charlie Mag, who tosses out doves and confetti like it ain’t no thang.

Those too old for an invitation to Hogwarts can venture to the

Scottish Storytelling Centre, where Luke Jermay (creative consultant to Derren Brown) and Ali Cook hold court all week, conducting unsettling, mind-probing mentalism. Grown-ups who like their magic sassy should enjoy the Four Nations Magic Off, as acts vie for top spot with a combination of comedic and phalangeal dexterity (Voodoo Rooms, Fri 5 Jul).

If you haven’t yet mastered conjuring gold coins out of thin air, there are a few free sneaky peeks on offer too. The Royal Mile acts as a street stage for the performers, and you can also throw on a sequined vest and join them for a drink at the MagicFest (Point Hotel, Thu 4 July). After all, magic tricks get even more impressive when sloshed. But do remember to keep an eye on your belongings: you just never know what those tricksters might pull out of a hat. (Jaclyn Arndt)
