RIGHT TO REPLY Re: Lack of female writers and directors in the Lyceum’s 2013 programme (712) Hannah McGill’s opinion piece raises the important issue of providing more opportunities for women in the arts, particularly in the theatre for writers and directors. In doing so she has chosen to suggest that the Royal Lyceum Theatre has a gender bias against women.
On behalf of everyone at the Lyceum I refute this suggestion in the strongest terms. Anyone familiar with our work will appreciate that the Lyceum has a strong track record of supporting women in theatre, ranging from the youngest members of our Youth Theatre to the esteemed performers, directors and creative contributors that we engage with on a regular basis. Had Hannah expressed her opinion
some 12 months ago, I am coni dent that she would have celebrated the Lyceum’s gender bias in producing a season of seven productions in 2012/2013 that featured 41 female actors, three female writers, one female director, i ve female assistant directors, two female designers and two female costume designers. With a board led by a female and nearly 60% of the board and senior management team being female, we understand more than most the need to provide opportunities for all and address the issue that Hannah has raised, but in doing so our primary objective is to continue to produce excellent work that engages and inspires our audiences. WEB-O-SPHERE DIGITAL DESPATCHES FOR THE TECHNOPHOBIC
This month we got a timely reminder on The List’s Facebook page that, no matter how much we pride ourselves on being your guide to the most exciting artistic and cultural events taking place in Scotland, you’ll still be more interested in a photo of a boxful of baby geese that passed through our office. You’ve been staring at it this whole time, not even listening to a word we’ve been saying, haven’t you? HAVEN’T YOU? The animal theme continued
elsewhere on the web, although with rather a more morbid theme. Doesthedogdie.com answers one of the most important questions you can have about Old Yeller before you put yourself through
the heartbreak of watching it. There’s a helpful mention of any other animal deaths (or near deaths) as well. Note: avoid Re-Animator if you like cats. Finally, list.co.uk user The
Famous Cash got some stuff off his or her chest about psychics. ‘ANYONE claiming to be psychic is in one, or both, of only two states: 1) A CON ARTIST. 2) MENTALLY UNWELL. Join the campaign to change our stupid laws which actually condone LEGALISED THEFT! The feeble-minded and vulnerable should be protected.’ So, y’know, if you’re ‘feeble- minded’, don’t worry – Cash has got your back.
THE QUESTION WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE EIFF PROGRAMME? We ask the question, you give the answer. Join in on Twitter @thelistmagazine and Facebook
@markcousinsfilm Just went to the @edfilmfest programme, launched today. There are 76 films I want to see in ten days. Can I be cloned please? @El_Duderino81 What’s not showing leads me to my two guesses for Surprise Movie: Filth or God Help the Girl. I’ll invariably be wrong.
@HenryNorthmore Horror @edfilmfest includes @TheConjuring, @FrankenArmy, @ OutpostMovies 3, The Complex & @ ShootingBigfoot: excellent.
@cockbongo Great to see #edfilmfest showing #Upstreamcolor this year. @robbiereviews Very solid #EdFilmFest programme this year. Can highly recommend A Story of Children and Film, Betrayal, For Those in Peril, Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction and The Bling Ring. But where’s Sunshine on Leith?
@NinjaWorrier Good looking #edfilmfest line-up. Of films I’ve seen, recommend Jiseul, This is Martin Bonner, Before Snowfall, Kiss The Water.
@day4night_films Great to see focus on #Korea & #Sweden at #edfilmfest: two thriving filmmaking scenes which we’ll be delving into more over the coming year!
@bobbymunro The ‘Films on Film’ strand looks particularly exciting, plus events (esp with @ PasqualeIannone) look pretty damn tempting too.
@edfilmfest After a two-year hiatus, the Audience Award will return this year at #edfilmfest! ■ For more on the EIFF, see feature, page 24.
