ANNOUNCEMENTS, LINE-UPS AND OPINION Karen Gillan stars in Not Another Happy Ending which closes this year’s EIFF

SPOTLIGHT ON:

DAVID SHRIGLEY Best known for his wry observations and funny, oft deliciously dark, line drawings, Shrigley has been praised for his ‘black humour, macabre intelligence and infinite jest’ by this year’s Turner Prize judges. Here’s why we love him

He’s a homeboy at heart: In an interview with The List in 2010, Shrigley spoke of his love of the Dear Green Place: ‘I moved to Glasgow as a teenager, and I’ve lived here more than half my life now. I don’t consider Leicester, where I’m originally from, as home anymore. Glasgow is my home.’

He loves a good tune: Shriggers directed the video for Blur’s ‘Good Song’ in 2003. The single didn’t exactly storm the charts but our Dave’s slightly crazed animated video makes it worth the punt. He’s done the film thing too: The pontificating polymath co- directed black and white 7-minute short Who Am I And What I Want with film director Chris Shepherd, in 2005, based on his book of the same name.

The Yanks love him: Well, American pop rocker Jason Mraz certainly does. He pinched the album name ‘We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things’ from one of Shrigley’s works. Musical anyone? We were a bit nervous when we heard Dave was planning to write sort-of-opera Pass the Spoon but his Ready Steady Cook-cum Terry And June romp was a hit. He’s a man of many talents.

16 May–13 Jun 2013 THE LIST 9

TRAVIS FOR T Glasgow band Travis are the latest to be announced for this year’s T in the Park. Other additions to the line-up include Fife-born Steve Mason, James Skelly of The Coral in his i rst solo outing and Ex-Smiths guitarist  Johnny Marr.

NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING FOR EIFF The Edinburgh International Film Festival is almost upon us, so too the news that former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan will appear in the closing film, in rom-com Not Another Happy Ending. Set in Glasgow, Gillan plays successful author Jane Lockhart in the midst of writers’ block. Her publisher, played by French actor Stanley Weber, has to make her miserable to rekindle her creative fire. But the worse he makes her feel, the more he falls in love with her.

BIRTHDAY BUMPS FOR BELLADRUM Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival’s 10th anniversary with be headlined by Manchester indie rock band James and Glasgow rockers Twin Atlantic. James, formed in 1982, have racked up 13 million sales worldwide, and provided hits such as ‘Come Home’, ‘Sit Down’ and ‘She’s A Star’. Twin Atlantic previously played Bella in 2008. Also performing are The Straits, consisting of former members of Dire Straits, as well as British band Noisettes.

THE CATS THAT GOT THE CREAM The Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland have announced their 2013 nominees, with the highest number of nominations for a single show going to Rob Drummond, who’s Quiz Show has received four nods. Alan Cumming has also been shortlisted for his performance in solo show Macbeth, which following its successful run in Scotland is now playing on Broadway. See criticsawards. theatrescotland.com for full list of nominations. The winners will be announced on 9 Jun.

NEW EIF DIRECTOR APPOINTED We won’t lie, we’re excited. Following much speculation, Fergus Linehan has been appointed as new director of the Edinburgh International Festival. Linehan has loads of experience in the arts having worked at the Dublin Theatre Festival in his native Ireland and from 2004-2009 as Chief Executive, and as Artistic Director at Sydney Festival in Aust ralia.

CREATIVE SCOTLAND RUMOURS Speaking of new appointments, whispers abound that the new head of Creative Scotland will be Robert Palmer; alas, no confirmation at time of going to press. Palmer is perhaps best known in Scotland for his successful directorship when Glasgow was European City of Culture in 1990. If it is him, we’ll give you full details as and when we have them at list.co.uk.
