WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH Various venues, nationwide, Mar It was Beyoncé (or should we say Mrs Carter #awarenessofcurrentevents) who mused that it’s girls who run the world, and never has that rung more true than this March, with a plethora of events happening in your neighbourhood for Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.

GLASGOW Ladyfest is back with two days of music from the likes of ANAKANAK, Muscles of Joy and Hector Bizerk, with a Lock Up Your Daughters after- party to boot (Kinning Park Complex, 8 & 9 Mar, ladyfestglasgow.com, see preview, page 72). Glasgow Women’s Library launch their Illuminated Letters Project, inspired by the work of Niki de Saint-Phalle with a programme of workshops including poetry, illustration and design (Gallery of Modern Art, 8 Mar, womenslibrary.org.uk). Glasgow University Feminist Society are putting on a week of events, with films, reading groups, debates and, ahem, vagina drawing (Glasgow University, 4–10 Mar, facebook.com/gufeministsociety), while lady collective TYCI are running a month of features on their website where their writers and guest contributors choose their favourite international woman of the day before their International Women’s Day Special gig with Honeyblood and SummerSlams (Bloc, 16 Mar, tyci.org.uk). EDINBURGH The National Library is hosting talks on the role of women in World War II (5 Mar), the role of women in science (7 Mar), Scottish female writers who were up there with Jane Austen (12 Mar) and The Biographical Dictionary of Scottish Women (19 Mar, nls.uk), while The Surgeons’ Hall investigates the idea of ‘female malady’ with special guest Margo MacDonald MSP (4 Mar, museum.rcsed.ac.uk). Engender, a research and networking organisation for women in Scotland, will be discussing women’s place in ‘transformative economics’ (Edinburgh City Council Chambers, 8 Mar, engender.org.uk), while The Scottish Women’s Convention returns to the Parliament, with speakers including Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Mette Kindberg and Liz Lochhead (9 Mar, scottishwomensconvention. org).
