CONTENTS T his issue we welcome our new books editor Kirsty Logan. She’s a regular face on Scotland’s spoken word scene and a fine fiction writer herself, and we’re chuffed that she’s taking up the reins of our literature coverage. Our books section is already sporting a new element: a flash fiction spot (see page 44) which should whet your appetite for something heftier. We also have a new columnist. Alice White has bravely agreed to explore Scotland’s more unusual events, this month we send her to try a bit of historical fencing (see page 112). Does she know what she’s let herself in for?!
In the rest of the mag you’ll find our interview with Chris Addison (who’s in Glasgow for the Comedy Festival, now in its 11th year – see page 12), David Bowie (back with a new album and also the subject of a season at the Filmhouse, page 17), The Great Gatsby (soon to be transformed to stage and screen, page 22) and a look at Derry and how it’s transforming as the first UK’s City of Culture (page 24). Get the diary out, the next few weeks are jam-packed.

FRIGHTFEST As the Glasgow Film Festival enters its closing weekend, the cult and horror strand comes into its own. Catch an advance glimpse of the highlights in our preview. THE GREAT GATSBY F Scott Fitzgerald’s jazz age novel is enjoying a bit of a resurgence at the moment. We delve into two upcoming adaptations: Baz Luhrmann’s movie and Northern Ballet’s dance production.
