CONTENTS R omance is in the air. By a happy coincidence, this year’s Glasgow Film Festival opens on Valentine’s Day. As you might expect the festival enters into the mood of things with a romantic comedy: the French 50s-set Populaire, which graces this issue’s cover. Despite our cynicism-soaked times, romcoms appear to be as popular as ever (just look at the success of Silver Linings Playbook, set to do rather nicely at this year’s Oscars). On page 11 Hannah McGill examines our fixation with romance on the big screen, while on page 26 we pick the best Valentine’s gifts, for lovers and skeptics alike. If the thought of romance makes you nauseous, however, our interview with Korean director Park Chan-wook might be more up your street (page 14), his disturbing thriller Stoker is quite the antidote to all things sickly sweet. And if you’d rather forget the whole sorry affair, instead look forward to a spring filled with excellent events; our nifty flow chart on page 20 will point you in the right direction.

GLASGOW FILM FESTIVAL The best film fest in the west is back and bigger than ever. Among the highlights are Sonic Cineplex, an all-day music and film mini-fest featuring techno legend Jeff Mills; Entre chien et loup, a Shining-inspired film-art exhibition and grand ball curated by Henry Coombes; and Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon’s no-budget, black and white Shakespeare adaptation. Read about all these and more from page 10.
