As part of GoMA’s Tales of the City series of exhibitions, a spectacular two-screen film installation by the Amsterdam-based artist Fiona Tan is displayed in the UK for the first time. The work explores historic and contemporary perceptions of the ‘oriental’ through ideas about colonialism, myth, identity and war. Niki de Saint Phalle: The Eric and Jean Cass Gift Until November. The late Niki de Saint Phalle had an unlikely
career; born into a privileged French family whose wealth was wiped out in the Depression, she became a teenage fashion model and then eloped to the USA before having a nervous breakdown and reinventing herself as creator of some of the most personal, vivid and engaging public art of the century. Collectors Eric and Jean Cass have gifted several Saint Phalle sculptures and various ephemera to the Gallery of Modern Art, as well as two oil paintings by John Bellany. Tales of the City: Gallery 2 Until June. Works from GoMA’s collection purchased on the Art Fund International scheme, in partnership with the Common Guild. Canadian photographer Margaret Watkins is increasingly recognised as one of the more striking and original talents of her generation. This exhibition displays her work from a 1933 trip to the post- revolutionary USSR.

Exhibition devoted to the work of John and Alexander Runciman, two of Scotland’s most important painters of the 18th century. The centrepieces are John Runciman’s oil painting Hagar and the Angel and his 1764 etching The Taking Down of the Netherbow, depicting the dismantling of the only fortified gateway in Edinburgh’s old city walls.

Exhibition showing how art historians are examining four different versions of the painting Christ Driving the Traders from the Temple, all of them by Bosch and Breughel – but was one of them the template for all the others and, if so, which one? Jamie Johnson Jamie Johnson is an experienced printmaker, bookmaker and a member of Edinburgh Printmakers. He is art director/co-founder of Harvest Skate Co, a new skateboard and apparel company which creates artist-designed skateboard decks, produces videos, publications and clothing and provides a platform for Scottish skateboarding and visual artists to gain exposure. He has exhibited as part of Recoat Gallery’s group show in December 2012 and is currently developing work for future shows.
Jamie also works as a visiting lecturer at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and has curated group shows in Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Toronto. His awards include the Nancy Graham Memorial Artist Book prize at Visual Arts Scotland (RSA Galleries) in 2011 and he was one of the awardees for the Cultural Enterprise Office’s Starter for 6 programme in 2012. ■ jamie-johnson.co.uk ■ thisiscentralstation.com
