British sculptor whose work displays a playful interest in illusion and artifice; he takes abandoned material or grungy bits of rubbish and painstakingly recreates them using art materials. For this show, his most ambitious solo exhibition in a public space so far, Hughes has produced a scale replica in the gallery space of a run- down community centre.

Derek Williams was a quiet chartered surveyor from Wales, who built up a remarkable collection of modern British art. It now belongs to a trust established in his name, and features important work by major figures such as Lucian Freud, Henry Moore, Sean Scully and Howard Hodgkin. Wilhelmina Barns-Graham: A Scottish Artist in St Ives Until Sun 17 Feb. Marking the centenary of the distinguished artist. John Clerk of Eldin (1728–1812) Until Sun 3 Feb. Etchings from John Clerk of Eldin, a true product of the Scottish Enlightenment. A successful businessman, he made enough money to devote himself to art and science. He went on geological tours with James Hutton, became an expert on naval tactics and was also an accomplished artist.

TRISHA BAGA: HOLIDAY New York-based emerging artist Trisha Baga is gradually becoming known for creating video and performance work that fuses an idiosyncratic storytelling style with a healthily sceptical interest in contemporary culture’s love affair with broadcast technology. For this, her first solo exhibition in the UK, Baga brings together a series of immersive installations composed of 3D projections of personal and found footage to create a chaotic landscape that will sprawl over both DCA galleries. Holiday is named after the 1983 hit single by Madonna, the object of Baga’s lifelong fascination. ■ Dundee Contemporary Arts, until Sun 27 Jan.

traveled to the Galápagos archipelago in the Pacific Ocean since 2007 as part of a residency programme. The Galápagos islands are among the most fascinating in the world, being the place where Charles Darwin observed such a variety of differing species scattered over so many islands close together that he began to draw certain earth-shaking inferences about the nature of life on this planet. Featured artists are Jyll Bradley, Paulo Catrica, Filipa Cesar, Marcus Coates, Dorothy Cross, Alexis Deacon, Jeremy Deller, Tania Kovats, Kaffe Matthews, Semiconductor and Alison Turnbull.
