HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB? JOBS
Name Tallah Brash
Job title Marketing & Events Manager Company The Electric Circus
When did you start your job? April 2010. I actually applied to be their Live Manager, which would’ve been overseeing everything band related in order to build a strong live schedule for the venue. They liked that I had experience from co-running This Is Music, working in Press and PR at Cabaret Voltaire, and also that I had some design and web experience from college courses. This lead to being offered the marketing job, but they said I could still do some live stuff if I wanted to – it was such a brilliant opportunity, I obviously said yes.

So what does your job actually involve? A year and a half on and my job entails a lot more now than I thought it would back when I started, including quite a big involvement with the live music. My main job is marketing everything the venue does, whether it be private karaoke, live music, club nights or the bar – in the last year this has also extended to discos for babies, cabaret shows, comedy and film screenings. On top of this I’m responsible for a fair bit of design work now, so most of the Electric Circus advertising you’ve seen around Edinburgh – and in various publications – was probably done by me. I’m also the Circus webmaster, where I regularly work on both design and content aspects of the site. Furthermore, I do a fair bit of office admin, compile monthly listings, send out e-newsletters, social networking, host a couple of club nights and take karaoke bookings – all in a day’s work! To be honest though, there isn’t one person at The Electric Circus who just does their job title. Best / Worst Aspects? The best thing about my job is that I get to do loads of different things, I’m always learning new skills and no two days are ever the same – it keeps me on my toes and means there’s never a dull moment. The worst thing is trying to juggle everything in office hours and not being able to switch off – it’s in my nature to want to know everything that’s going on all the time, so there’s rarely a day/evening off work where you won’t catch me replying to e-mails from my phone, updating the website or the Facebook page, checking our Twitter feed or having a nosey at ticket figures – at the end of the day though, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love it.
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Tallah at the start of her career? I always wanted to be involved in music and events from an early age, so I would’ve told myself to be more confident from the get go and to just go for it rather than wasting several years trying to figure it out. In saying that though, if I hadn’t studied architecture for a couple of years, worked in retail or at the bank then maybe I wouldn’t have ended up doing what I’m doing. And finally . . . what are you most looking forward to in 2013? Glastonbury! In all seriousness though, I’m looking forward to an even busier year at the Circus – I think people are finally coming around to the idea that we’re a multifunctional space which works as a cocktail bar, a nightclub, a live music venue and a karaoke bar. I can’t wait for the next chapter and all the extra work that will no doubt come with it!
