For this year’s Usher Hall Hallowe’en celebrations, they’re going for a 1920s theme and the audience is encouraged to show up in 20s garb, or fancy dress. They’ll be screening The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, (pictured) the famously angular, visually bold, monochrome silent film, made in 1920. Donald MacKenzie, silent film organist, will provide a live soundtrack for the onscreen drama. Prior to that, they’ll show short film The Fall of the House of Usher (1928) based on a story from Edgar Allan Poe. Before and after the films, a 1920s style jazz band will perform in the café/bar, so it has the makings of a roaring night out. Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sun 28 Oct. See Classical Hitlist, page 107.
