PREVIEW FAMILY CONCERT CHILDREN’S CLASSIC CONCERTS: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? Usher Hall, Edinburgh, Sun 28 Oct; Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Sat 3 Nov

There can be few sounds more chilling than the opening bars of Jaws. Instantly recognisable no matter what context you hear them in, within seconds images of shark fins push all other thoughts aside.

So it’s no surprise to find that John Williams’ aquatic anti-hero has made it onto the programme of Children’s Classic Concerts’ latest offering. Performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Mission Impossible? will feature some of the best-loved soundtracks from the worlds of television and film.

As usual, energetic presenters Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox (aka

percussionists Owen & Olly) have had a hand in choosing the musical line-up. ‘Two of my favourite movie soundtracks are Jurassic Park and Jaws by John Williams,’ says Cox, ‘and audiences will be able to hear bits from both of these in the Mission Impossible? concert.’

Also on the bill are sections from St Trinian’s, Rocky and Billy Elliot, with Owen & Olly’s lack of talent in the ballet department made up for by guests dancers from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Although all the pieces being performed were composed to

complement on-screen action, according to Cox, letting the soundtracks speak for themselves brings about a whole new appreciation. ‘Hearing the music from famous films live on stage is a fantastic and

completely different experience to hearing it in the cinema,’ he says. ‘At the cinema or on TV, the soundtrack is used to enhance the visual experience of the film, whereas played live in our concerts, the music and the orchestra are the main event.’ (Kelly Apter)
