18 OCT–15 NOV YOU’VE GOT 29 DAYS TO LIVE! The Arches has hit 21 and to celebrate we’ve picked a few of the highlights from over two decades of performance, live gigs and clubs (see page 13). Researching the feature turned out to be not just a fascinating insight into the venue but also into Glasgow’s recent history. Established just after it was given European City of Culture status in 1990, the milestones in the Arches’ history reflect Glasgow’s emergence as a hotspot for some of the most exciting and adventurous culture in the world today. I particularly love the story of Nic Green getting her armpit licked while performing at Death Disco and of the eccentric artist Leigh Bowery delighting clubbers of Cafe Loco with his ‘live birth’ performance (sadly just a year before his untimely death). The weird and wonderful certainly seem to sum up the Arches, here’s to 21 more years.

Arches’ 21st birthday It’s hard to believe, but the cavernous space below Glasgow’s Central Station has been with us for more than two decades, providing some of the best music, club and theatre events we’ve ever had. Check out our feature from page 13, exploring the defining moments in the Arches’ history including a first-person look around the 20th anniversary revival of Alien War.
