GEORGE WYLLIE: IN PURSUIT OF THE QUESTION MARK One of Scotland’s best loved artists is to be celebrated in a major retrospective in his home city. In Pursuit of the Question Mark looks at the life and work of George Wyllie, the creator of famous large-scale sculptures ‘The Paper Boat’ and ‘The Straw Locomotive’ who died this year at the age of 90. The retrospective, curated by his elder daughter, Louise Wyllie, includes some of the artist’s earliest sculptures, including a fish made from old car bumpers dating from the 1960s and a peacock made from washers and scrap metal (pictured). A man-sized robin, made by Wyllie with his son-in-law in 2005, will guard the entrance to the exhibition. The show’s title is taken from Wyllie’s description of himself as a ‘scul?tor’ because, he claimed, the question mark should always be at the centre. ■ The Mitchell Library, Glasgow, Sat 3 Nov–Sat 2 Feb.
