PREVIEW NEW WORK LONDON Tron Theatre, Glasgow, Tue 13–Sat 17 Nov

Simon Stephens is fast developing a reputation as Britain’s most prolific playwright, having given us Three Kingdoms and Morning this year already. His latest offering with Paines Plough, London, incorporates two previous plays: Sea Wall, which featured in the Traverse’s Fringe programme in 2009, and T5.

Although it’s named after the UK’s capital, its story is universal. ‘The play is about people,’ explains cast member Abby Ford, ‘ordinary people who share a loss of self in one way or another. If you live in any city you can understand how small we all feel sometimes and how disconnected you can feel from yourself and the world around you.’

The play focuses on two stories about family. But despite its theme of alienation, Ford is convinced of the play’s uplifting qualities. ‘I pass people in the street everyday,’ she says, ‘and I wonder, “Who are you, I wonder what it’s like to be you and what’s that thing I can see in your eyes?” And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could truly share those things with each other? Maybe the world wouldn’t seem so big.’ (Yasmin Sulaiman)
