Eight Songs for a Mad King Don’t miss the rare chance to see Peter Maxwell Davies’ extraordinary music theatre piece, based on the later years of George III, in Hebrides Ensemble’s striking new production. Each musician represents one of the king’s pet birds, playing from inside a cage, with percussion instruments including scrap metal and chains. (see Theatre listings, page 115.) The Cabinet of Dr Caligari Hallowe’en at the Usher Hall presents the classic 1920 silent horror movie about an evil hypnotist, with drama and intrigue terrifyingly heightened by live accompaniment from international concert organist Donald MacKenzie on the hall’s magnificent organ. Efterklang and Northern Sinfonia In a change to their usual repertoire, Northern Sinfonia join with Danish experimental rock band Efterklang for one of their ground-breaking integrated orchestral projects, The Piramida Concert, pushing musical boundaries in a way quite unlike anyone else (see Rock & Pop listings, page 93.)
