CLASSICAL FESTIVAL LAMMERMUIR FESTIVAL Various venues, East Lothian, Fri 14–Sun 23 Sep

Beautiful music in beautiful places is the strapline of East Lothian’s Lammermuir Festival and, actually, that pretty much sums it up. Delving further into just what that means reveals some pretty phenomenal venues and programmes that can only be offered in this particular part of Scotland. Where else could there be a music and light show in medieval castle ruins on a dramatic coastal outcrop? Or, how else could you make a legitimate visit to the magnificent Yester House, not so long ago the home of Italian composer Gian Carlo Menotti who bought it for the acoustics of its impressive salon? Now in its third year, the Lammermuir Festival’s most striking event

for 2012 is Tantallon! These Lands This Wall, with a new work from composer William Sweeney and writer Aonghas MacNeacail, which promises to bring the building, its history and East Lothian’s past to life. Red Note Ensemble provide the music, which will be heard alongside images projected onto the castle’s walls.

‘With 2012 being the Year of Creative Scotland we wanted to do something to celebrate that,’ says festival director James Waters, ‘as well as Lammermuir’s roots of bringing the community together through high class classical music.’ (Carol Main)
