Crate DIGGING
MARCEL HEESE Unseen are inviting Berlin techno club Tresor to take over for the night. Tresor resident Marcel Heese (who guests alongside Pacou) gives us a taste of what to expect. Phase ‘Binary Opposition (Process 1)’ (Token Records) pretty much stands for the typical kind of club techno I love. It’s deep and hypnotic, yet powerful. I’ve been playing this in every single set for months now.
Developer is a bit hit and miss for me. There are tracks I just don’t get but then there are tracks like Developer ‘Trade Beliefs’ (Semantica Records) that are just out of this world. It suddenly goes from super aggressive to totally deep.
When I first heard Byetone ‘Opal’ (Raster-Noton) I was blown away. It sounds quite simple but you’ll notice the details when you listen carefully. The track just builds and builds.
When Kalon ‘Man is the Superior Animal’ (Sandwell District) came out in 2008 I didn’t like it at all. But as the Sandwell fanboy I was/am, I bought it anyways. Since playing it in a club I didn’t regret my decision for a second. It’s quite minimal and super dry but still manages to have that little extra that makes you move.
Words can’t do Vainqueur ‘Lyot (Maurizio Mix)’ (Novamute) justice. When someone asks me about techno it’s this track I show him. It pretty much sums up techno for me. And it was already done 20 years ago. Can you believe that?!
I heard Surgeon playing Tresor in 2003 and British Murder Boys ‘Learn Your Lesson’ (Counterbalance) was one of those ‘what-the- fuck?’ moments. The breakdown after two minutes is simply breathtaking and the more synth-driven second part makes it one of the best post-2000 techno tracks. ■ Unseen at Studio 24, 558 3758, 3 Aug, 10.30pm-5am, £10.

Hot Mess Gay clubnight that’s all about the music. Simonotron mans the decks as Hot Mess invite their Glasgow contemporaries Lock Up Your Daughters along for the ride. Coalition An unholy union of bass and rockabilly from Drop the Lime, who can’t wait to get back to Sneaky’s (‘it’s so wild’) as this is his fifth trip back to Edinburgh’s most intimate club space. Jackhammer A mix of techno and char-grilled meat as Jackhammer treat us to BBQ food and tough electronica from Radioactive Man, Vince Watson, Industrialyzer and more. Annexe at the Liquid Room, 225 2564, 4 Aug, 9pm– 5am, £10 before midnight; £13 after.
Sunday Circus The house night hosts a party in a secret location, near Edinburgh, all very mysterious. One thing we know for sure is Sebo K, Craig Richards and Rory are the tip top guests. Secret Location, facebook. com/sundaycircus, 5 Aug, 3–10pm, £20.
Musika Quirky house/electro informed by the sounds of his native Detroit and his home town of Berlin from wayward producer Seth Troxler (Visionquest), headlining Musika’s Festival warm-up party. The Liquid Room, 225 2564, 4 Aug, 10.30pm–5am, £15.
