19 Jul–2 Aug 2012 THE LIST 81
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the ever controversial composer John Cage – he of the silent piece entitled 4’33’ in recognition of its length – the BBC SSO pay tribute to him with music calling for an amplified cactus, crumpled up pieces of paper, stereo cassette players and a grand piano that has been filled up in advance with lots of nuts and bolts. Ilan Volkov conducts, as well as improvising on plucked, dried cactus spines. ■ BBC SSO, City Halls, Glasgow, Sat 28 Jul.
