Genius of Hitchcock: The Lodger
Live from the Barbican comes this ‘cinecast’ of Alfred Hitchcock’s silent thriller The Lodger, with a live soundtrack by Nitin Sawhney (composer and musician known for his jazz and electronica inspired music) and the London Symphony Orchestra. Made in 1928, this story of a serial killer on the loose in fog-shrouded London saw Hitchcock introduce themes that he would return to again and again throughout his career (sex, murder and individuals on the run). The event kicks off with a pre-show reel of mini-docs and is followed by a Q&A with Nitin Sawhney. ■ GFT, Glasgow, Sat 21 Jul.

Brokeback Mountain (15) (Ang Lee, 2005) Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal. 134min. Lee’s intimate epic poignantly charts a furtive relationship between two ranch hands over the course of several decades. In a strong cast Ledger is truly outstanding, imbuing his inarticulate character with an aching humanity. Less a gay Western than a universally resonant love story. Part of the Summer of Love season.
